Deciding Whether to Choose a Plastic Surgeon or a Dermatologist for Botox Treatments Tags: dermatologist cosmetic disease

Although many people think of cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons as the best practitioners for Botox injections, a specialist in cosmetic and general dermatology also administers these treatments. Experts in the skin care field debate about whether plastic surgeons or dermatologists are better suited for providing Botox and dermal fillers that make patients look younger. Botox works by blocking signals from nerves to muscles.

Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists

Both types of practitioners have focused on skin care during their extensive medical school training and hospital residency. Dermatologists concentrate more on skin disease and treatment, as well as skin physiology and its function. Plastic surgeons, because they are qualified to do facial and body modifications and reconstruction, typically know more about facial anatomy.

Thus, an individual wondering whether to choose a practitioner of general dermatology and cosmetic dermatology for Botox treatments can feel completely comfortable with this decision. It is not necessary to see a plastic surgeon to achieve optimum results.

Board Certification

The one caveat is that the individual probably shouldn't just choose the the closest dermatologist to his or her home. The doctor should be board-certified by the American Academy of Dermatology, like the dermatologist at Soine Dermatology & Aesthetics is. This assures patients of a high level of expertise.

Now that this decision has been made, what about timing? Dermatologists recommend having Botox injections done at least two weeks before an important social event the person is looking forward to. It might be a class reunion or a wedding, and two weeks allows the substance to reach its full effects. The first effects should be visible within a week and gradually become more satisfactory. The effects should last at least three months, and most patients continue experiencing the full results for a good six months.

Eventually the muscle relaxation effects will dissipate and the person will need to return to the center for additional treatments. The patient will be able to maintain an appearance with dramatic reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, although the deepest wrinkles will still show to a certain extent. The effect is decidedly rejuvenating, making the person look years younger.

Doctors typically recommend that the injections be done no more frequently than every three months. People can safely have the treatments for as many years as they want to. They should understand that Botox can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles but cannot eliminate all of them
